The Not-So Dog Days of Summer

For most, it is the lazy dog days of summer, but the Shore Sirens have kept plenty busy through the riding season. After announcing our registration as a not-for-profit (NFP) and membership requirements in April, we have grown to a strong group of 150 members.

Our board of directors, Jessie, Cathleen, and Gaby, are extremely proud of how far this group has come and the massive support of the community in the short span the original group and NFP has existed.

The Membership

With their memberships, Sirens have had access to some amazing events planned by our Organization Committee over the last few months, including:

Group Rides

We have weekly group rides for three riding levels (1-, 2-, 3-"spice") on the North Shore every

Tuesday from April until September.

These could not be possible without our volunteer rides and sweeps. Anyone available or interested in helping with group rides should get in contact with our Group Ride Manager, Wan-Yi Chiu.

Mechanic Workshops

We just wrapped up a series of workshops catered to all experience levels. Each evening hosted at Steed Cycles focused on a different aspect of bike mechanics and was taught by mechanic-extraordinaire Ash Kelly.

The series was extremely popular, and any feedback is encouraged for future workshops.

Mentorship Program

Interested mentors and mentees of all riding skill levels submitted applications and were paired up earlier this year. The program allows riders in our community to connect, mentors to give back, and mentees to grow confidence in their riding.

The mentorship program is now closed to applicants for this season, but stay in the loop for updates on a 2025 program.

Trail Building and Maintenance Opportunities

In collaboration with NSMBA and Adidas Terrex, Shore Sirens has adopted the 7th Secret trail at Fromme Mountain. This gives Shore Sirens an opportunity to connect with the trails and give back to the community. No dig, no ride!

Stay tuned to see upcoming dig days and workshops.

Gear Closet

A gear swap fundraiser was planned and hosted by Liv in June, with profits going toward funding travel for our race team. The event was a great success and lots of fun, and the leftover donations spawned an even greater Shore Sirens venture: an open Gear Closet for any Siren in need of mountain bike gear or clothing.

As the Shore Sirens aims to build an inclusive and supportive community for all women+ and non-binary mountain bikers, we are proud to plan and take part in community events supporting this goal.

The Shore Sirens Race Team

The race team consisting of 8 Sirens, is wrapping up its inaugural season. With support from Adidas Terrex and Steed Cycles, the team has participated in multiple enduro mountain bike races in BC and Washington State since April 2024.

Keep an eye out in the coming months for information on the 2025 race team.

Queer and Allies Rides

An incredible 50 riders turned out for the Shore Sirens Queer and Allies Ride on August 3rd at Fromme Mountain, corresponding to Vancouver Pride. We love hosting these inclusive rides to help grow and create a stronger community that is looking for a safe space to ride.

As always, thanks to Adidas Terrex for sponsoring the event, and buying all participants an après drink at Wildeye Brewing!

Podcast

The Paradigm Shift, hosted by Sirens Jessie and Cathleen, showcases inspiring members of our riding community. Tune in to hear stories and experiences as told by fellow Shore Sirens, and prepare to be motivated! Interested in telling your story, let's chat!

Women+ Rides

Many Shore Sirens travelled to Whistler Bike Park to take part in the Liv A-Line Event in July. The annual event closes Whistler Bike Park’s A-Line jump trail to the public and gives women+/non-binary riders an opportunity to learn the jumps and features in an intimidation-free zone. It is an incredible atmosphere to take part in, and we want to thank Vanessa Lebrun, a fellow Shore Siren, for organizing such a great event.

After watching women take part in Crankworx Joyride for only the first time in 2024, it further emphasizes the need for these types of inclusive events in our community.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Instagram and events page for fun, upcoming Sirens events and news.
